No actual leaks in the thread, people!

Where to find...

Kudo, King Among Bears seems pretty fun, although I hope there's going to be more bear kindred support. Since he affects all creatures, stuff like Alpha Status and OG Norn works. And They Shall Know No Fear is Heroic Intervention at home, and Roaming Throne works for all of your creatures. Go-wide tokens seems like it would work, as would 0/0 creatures like Kalonian Hydra. Might be worth looking into the EDHREC cards for the two selesnya cat legends from Lost Caverns of Ixalan?

Herigast, Erupting Nullkite Kinda feel like an Emerge commander would be black and/or green instead? IDK how to abuse this either, red doesn't have that many good "overcosted" creatures like Avatar of Fury.

Null Elemental Blast: yeah this is really good in EDH, where every random utility land taps for .

Final Act: playable experience counter hate in EDH.

Looks like the Blue Tron sickos (it's me, I'm sickos) are eating good from these previews.

Cthonian Nightmare also seems like it must be busted in Modern. If we get a Priest of Gix snuck in with the old card slot or a functional equivalent a new graveyard deck should take off. Stitcher's Supplier into Nightmare seems like it should Go Off.

Also with Horizons sets adding first-printing-in-Commander cards like Kess and Laelia, it really bothers me to have new, non-Modern legal cards in the MH3 Commander decks. Or just... having the M3C decks at all.

I presume that Nulldrifter's card drawing ability is a cast trigger and not an enters-the-battlefield trigger to prevent players from abusing it, as they can with Mulldrifter?

May 4, 2024 11:20 p.m.

SpammyV says... #4

But that makes it rife for a whole new level of abuse. In my Magic Christmas Land, I get to Dress Down on my opponent's end step and then Evoke Nulldrifter which means I get to draw cards because of the cast trigger but not have to sacrifice it. And maybe kill a Territorial Kavu in the process.

Here's hoping for Null versions of Subtlety's cycle, sure that will work out great this time

How is Planar Nexus any different from Nearby Planet?

May 8, 2024 10:26 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #9

Planar Nexus enters untapped & doesn't need an additional payment from another land to stick around. Nexus also has the upside of color filtering/fixing.

Arcades is getting a 0/12 vanilla defender for four, not bad

Basking Broodscale: this surely goes infinitive with a lot of things, e.g. Rosie Cotton of South Lane

May 17, 2024 1:13 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #13

Forgot about Scurry Oak which is obviously very similar, but Basking Broodscale doesn't need another card to make a token, goes infinitive with e.g. Blade of the Bloodchief and can produce infinitive colorless mana

May 17, 2024 1:44 p.m.

SpammyV says... #14

Given that you can get Blade with Stoneforge Mystic and Urza's Saga I think the odds are 100% there's a week or two of everyone trying out a GW shell with Basking Broodscale. I've also seen Sadistic Glee pointed out to make it a Pauper player.

Finally

Coram: Kagha, Shadow Archdruid on (red) steroids, but as she's AFAIK not too popular I feel that's not saying too much. Only on your turns. Worth noting that e.g. Hermit Druid works too.

Cayth, Famed Mechanist: "I have no idea who you are." Anyway, all your creature spells coming with a free token or even counter probably has some combo potential, even if Cloudstone Curio is out.

Azlask the Swelling Scourge: Spawning Pit works well here.

Ulalek, Fused Atrocity: Dimensional Infiltrator's time to shine!

Disa the Restless: I dare you to cast Mnemonic Betrayal

Omo, Queen of Vesuva: Not just "changeling counter" since it needs to cover both creatures and land. I kinda wish the counters had their own intrinsic rules, like flying counters. Note that land creatures don't get pseudo-changeling.

Kozilek, the Broken Reality: Does a card that you need to pay nine mana for really need even a minor drawback?

Sorin of House Markov: first extort commander!

Ral, Monsoon Mage: Not a fan of the flip damage. Can't red just have their own reliable Baral, Chief of Compliance?

Volatile Stormdrake: Nerfed Gilded Drake is still pretty good; plenty of high-value creatures at MV <=4. A sorcery-speed kill spell that pierces indestructible isn't horrible either (especially if it has a good on-death trigger.)

Flare of Fortitude: kinda wish this was Flare of Angel's Grace instead.

Trickster's Elk: I kinda hate this? IIRC, Kenrith's Transformation was a break, or at least a strong bend due to time constraints.

"Everything Counter" is terminology that is taking me out of the game whenever I think about it.

It's a little funny to me that while this set has to carry water for Commander like every set has to, the new Eldrazi titans are not designed for multiplayer. Target player, target opponent, up to two target players. Hope someone doesn't get fired over that oversight.

Bloodbraid Challenger being an M3C exclusive bothers me. I can sort of forgive the wonky "This specific execution of a mechanic needs a commander or we'll never hear the end of it on twitter" designs being in M3C, but Bloodbraid Elf has a pedigree in competitive magic, has already had a callback in Bloodbraid Marauder, but now this callback is arbitrarily locked out of Modern.

Omo, Queen of Vesuva + Inkmoth Nexus + Embiggen -> 21/21 flying infecter

I really wanted to get Fireblast printed into Modern... but we got this instead...

Skoa, Embermage {4}{R}{R} Legendary Creature — Goblin Wizard

When Skoa, Embermage enters the battlefield, deals 4 damage to any target.

Grandeur — Discard another card named Skoa, Embermage, Sacrifice two Mountains: Skoa deals 4 damage to any target.

“I need kindling. You’ll do nicely.”

Is it just be or does this almost feel like deciding to run Thunderous Wrath in burn... high damage payoff but a little bit too Janky?

May 23, 2024 7:39 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #20

Kinda surprised they didn't use Talibah for that, but I guess they wanted it to be a goblin, with a simple goblin-ish name to boot

May 23, 2024 12:05 p.m.

Icbrgr says... #21

wow.... this is probably huge for fish players...

Harbinger of the Seas {1}{U}{U} Creature — Merfolk Wizard

Nonbasic lands are Islands.

The rising moon calls mercilessly to the waves, commanding the sea to rise high enough to devour mountains.

2/2

May 24, 2024 10:54 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #22

Kinda disapointed about Harbinger of the Seas, I think white deserves more land hate over blue. I understand that Islands matter is a thing though, especially for merfolk.

I'm surprised Hydra Trainer isn't a legend given that its art was previewed early

Necrodominance: idk why this is legendary

May 24, 2024 11:57 a.m.

Icbrgr says... #23

Well at least blue also has a history with changing land types too with things like Convincing Mirage/Spreading Seas and Tideshaper Mystic.

White got a land hate card this set... a 2/2 creature that has an etb of destroying a non basic land and replacing it with a basic... very underwhelming and definitely deserved/could be better

Coward_Token says... #24

For power, I feel a closer comparsion is Back to Basics :)

SpammyV says... #25

It's funny to me that they gave us energy-themed takes on Recurring Nightmare and Aluren but then they seemed like they were worried that players wouldn't be able to figure out combos to break those cards so we have Guide of Souls (Gain 1 life and 1 E when a creature ETBs) and Metastatic Evangel (proliferate when a creature ETBs) just to make sure you can do some nonsense... With Aluren and Nightmare.

Ocelot Pride: The "Then"-copy trigger also requires you to have gained life, right?

Dreamtide Whale: probably not going to die to Fade in EDH.

Fowl Strike: idk what the flavor text is referencing

Lion Umbra: Why would channeling a lion give you reach? They hunt by running, not jumping.

Expel the Unworthy: Missed opportunity to shoehorn in Cleave

May 28, 2024 12:07 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #27

Lion Umbra and Dog Umbra bring me a couple of steps closer to Crow Umbra being a reality lol. Maaaaybe by Modern Horizons 5. Time to start pestering Mark Rosewater on Tumblr.

In regards to Ocelot Pride, you do need to gain life for its entire paragraph end step trigger text lol.

I'm starting to poke at options for Pauper Energy, but there doesn't seem to be a good wincon yet. Thinking about a core, hoping or gets something juicy.

Wing It: missed opportunity to make an Improvise pun

Silverquill Lecturer: For a do-nothing creature with mediocre stats and a drawback ability, I feel this is overcosted.

Stone Idol Generator: Kinda wish this instead let you pay ten to make an Ancient Stone Idol token (which in turn would make its own token on death)

Muster the Departed: Just please give me white Bitterblossom for 3 T_T

Nightshade Dryad: kinda surprised it's not an Eldrazi or at least Ugin-flavored

Phyrexian Ironworks: don't even need energy support for this to work

Fanged Flames: I get that it's a reference to Ghostfire, but I don't really see the connection between snakes & Ugin

Final Act: Missed opportunity to call it "Begone"

Obstinate Gargoyle: kinda wish this was a 1/1 with undying instead

May 29, 2024 5:56 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #30

Trenchpost: I feel these are too clumsy in singleton formats. Maybe reprint-to-Modern in MH4?

"Auslöschender" Magmarch: Surprised this isn't just a commander (would be especially cool if it copied for each other opponent). IDK why it has regenerate either.

Infested Thrinax: kinda wish it said "non-Saproling creature" instead.

I just had Amped Raptor pointed out to me... when I saw the spoiler I just saw the symbol and my eyes glazed over amd dismissed it... but holy cow this thing seems good... almost like Burning-Tree Emissary in a way.

Thran Vigil + Evolution Witness. There's gotta be something there. Put all artifacts and creatures from your graveyard into your hand and put that many +1/+1 counters on Evolution Witness.

June 9, 2024 3:11 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #36

Coward_Token, I fully agree with that, and, on that subject, I am very glad that Warren Soultrader has no restrictions, but I do fear that it could easily be overpowered.

Also, why is it that Xavier Sal, Infested Captain has restrictions on his abilities, but Cayth, Famed Mechanist does not? What makes them so different from each other?
