It counts itself. The first ruling on Kodama of the Center Tree:

Soulshift is a leaves the battlefield trigger, so the gamestate is referenced immediately before the Soulshift trigger to determine the value of X. Soulshift X includes Kodama of the Center Tree. So, X is always at least 1.

I am currently building around Kodama of the Center Tree, and I am curious if the soulshift trigger is checked when it is put onto the stack or when it is resolving.

For example, if I control five spirits including my Kodama, then I sacrifice it bringing my spirit count to four, will the trigger consider the value 5 and able to target the Kodama, or will the value be 4 and considered unable to target the Kodama?

Kodama of the Center Tree is super powerful in a spirit deck. With enough spirits, it can easily recurr itself, and even bringung back something like a Sekki usually isn't too hard. Iirc, as Soulshift triggers from the battlefield, you only need it plus four other spirits to have it have Soulshift 5. And I just realized you have a Teysa Karlov in here. That makes Center Tree even better.

I feel there should be some kind of infinite combo with the new Kodama and Kodama of the Center Tree for infinite spirit triggers. I can't put my finger on it, though. Any ideas?

As a side note, I must express my adoration for the Kamigawa block; A gorgeous set lore wise, and an even more beautiful aesthetic Plane as a whole. So damn nice. Real shame it was so comparatively weak compared to Mirrodin Block.

So, we have multiple Kodama's of the various Trees, such as the new Kodama of the East Tree, and the rest being Kodama of the North Tree, Kodama of the South Tree, and Kodama of the Center Tree. We don't have a kodama of the West Tree though.....you should create one!
