Gidgetimer on Caesar and Combat Celebrant Sequencing

The second part of Combat Celebrant's ability is a reflexive trigger. It is created and immediately checked as you are attacking. You can stack the reflexive trigger and Caesar, Legion's Emperor trigger in either order since both have triggered since the last time triggers were put on the stack. This allows you to untap and attack with the Caesar tokens if you would like.

If I have Combat Celebrant and Caesar, Legion's Emperor on the field and attack, is it possible to sequence the untap from exerting Celebrant so I can attack with the soldiers created by Caesar? The wording of "as it attacks" vs "whenever you attack" is tripping me up.

Neotrup's answer is correct due to the following rule (specifically, the second sentence highlighted below in bold). I have changed the "Accepted answer" to reflect this.

712.14a If a spell or ability puts a transforming double-faced card onto the battlefield “transformed” or “converted,” it enters the battlefield with its back face up. If a player is instructed to put a card that isn’t a transforming double-faced card onto the battlefield transformed or converted, that card stays in its current zone.

Sea-Dasher Octopus will not return to the battlefield and will remain in exile. The transform effect will try to return Sea-Dasher Octopus to the battlefield transformed, but since it is a single-face card it cannot and will leave it in exile.

Gidgetimer on Clue Food Treasure token synergies

Replacement effects (which is the type of ability that all three of these are) do not trigger and do not use the stack. They simply change the outcome of a game event and can only apply to a given event once. Since you are the affected player you will get to choose the order in which the abilities apply.

Assuming that you want as many tokens as possible the optimal way to apply the effects is going to be PT & CotPP (in either order) and then AM since this will turn the clue into 2 clues and a food and then those three will be replaced with a food, a clue, and a treasure each netting you 3 each of food, treasures, and clues.

AM and then PT & CotPP (in either order) will result in 2 food, 1 treasure, and 2 clues. The upkeep clue turns into one of each token and then an additional clue and an additional food are added.

PT, AM, CotPP results in 2 food, 2 treasure, 3 clues.

CotPP, AM, PT results in 3 food, 2 treasure, 2 clues.

I have recently started building a new deck. It is a Morska, Undersea Sleuth deck.

I have so far been playtesting it on here and then today playtested it in a real 4 man pod with some playtest cards.

I have narrowed it down to be a Krark-Clan Ironworks + Myr Retriever + Scrap Trawler combo deck.

Whilst fine tuning the list I noticed a potential combo that I am unsure about. I am curious to know how the following three cards interact.

I understand the replacement effect between Peregrin Took & Academy Manufactor, but what happens if you throw the third card into the mix?

Am I right in thinking the following:

Clue enters. PT & COTPP both trigger. I stack & resolve PT. AM sees this and multiplies the additional clue to make a food & treasure. Do I then get a second replacement effect from COTPP which makes an extra clue & triggers AM again, which then creates a loop?

Is this an infinite loop that would present a draw unless I could removed a combo piece?

Could the planeswalker survive being delt 2 damage if that would kill the creature?

Season of the Witch's effect looks at creatures that could have been declared as attackers during the Declare Attackers step but weren't. The ruling you found means you won't be penalized for not taking any additional actions to enable a creature to attack if it is currently unable. For example: if you choose not to activate Tidewater Minion's first ability, then it can't attack, so Season of the Witch won't destroy it. However, an enchanted/equipped Novice Knight who doesn't attack will get destroyed, because it could have been declared as an attacker. Likewise for any Defender while Arcades, the Strategist is around.

While looking over old cards I came upon Season of the Witch and the card text (and it's offical wordings) are extremely confusing. On the offical MTG website the ruling says "A creature won't be destroyed if it was unable to attack that turn, even if you had a way to enable it to attack. For example, a creature that had summoning sickness wouldn't be destroyed even if you had a way to give it haste."

My question is to what extent does this apply? Creatures like Arcades, the Strategist allow cards with defender to attack, and creatures like Novice Knight allow themselves to attack under certain circumstances.

Will Season of the witch destroy them at end step or do they get by?

Gidgetimer on Can something trigger after "end …

Yes, you get a drake.

Triggered abilities trigger any time their condition is met. When the Sygg trigger resolves you will draw your second card in a turn and the Alandra trigger is met and will be put on the stack the next time a player receives priority.

There is one card to be careful of with Alandra, Sky Dreamer, but as long as no one is using Day's Undoing; you will always create a taken if you draw 2 or more cards in a turn. (I have some 9 year old gripes about changing rules, but that is beyond the scope of this thread.)

Rhadamanthus on How Phase out and "At …

No, you won't have to sacrifice Ball Lightning to its own ability.

You don't have to stack the triggers in a special way to make this work. Teferi's Veil makes the creature phase out "at end of combat" but Ball Lightning's ability triggers "at the beginning of the end step". Because Ball Lightning is phased out by the time the turn gets to the end step, its ability won't trigger at all. Even if it was a situation with two simultaneous triggers that needed to be stacked in a specific order, if the "phase out" trigger resolves first then there's nothing around for you to sacrifice when the "sacrifice this" trigger resolves.

Rhadamanthus on At what point can I …

You don't need to have a reason.

The first item in that list, "whenever they have priority", allows players to activate mana abilities at any time they'd normally be able to take an action. The other items in that list give players special permission to also activate mana abilities at times they normally wouldn't be able to take an action (because they don't have priority at those times), but only if a mana payment is needed at that specific time.

Keep in mind that if you pass priority with unused mana still in your mana pool, you're supposed to let other players know how much mana is still in your pool.

TehGrief on At what point can I …

I am trying to understand this comprehensive rule:

605.3a "A player may activate an activated mana ability whenever they have priority, whenever they are casting a spell or activating an ability that requires a mana payment, or whenever a rule or effect asks for a mana payment, even if it’s in the middle of casting or resolving a spell or activating or resolving an ability."

Does this mean that I need to have a reason to tap a land for mana, such as a cost? I cannot tap my lands to produce mana for no reason?

For example, am I able to tap Forbidden Orchard without paying a cost in order to give an opponent the 1/1 token?

plakjekaas on Dryad of the Ilysian Grove …

Also, if playing a land causes an ability to trigger, the opponent gets to respond before you get to play your second land

Rhadamanthus on Dryad of the Ilysian Grove …

No, you won't be able to play another land in that example. In the current rules, you determine whether or not you can play a land by comparing how many land plays the game currently says you have to how many you've already played this turn. If the Dryad is gone, you've already made a land play, and there isn't anything else giving you additional plays, then that's it.

Keep in mind that playing lands doesn't use the stack and the active player gets priority again after a spell resolving, so if you want to go land-Dryad-land or Dryad-land-land, there's no opportunity for an opponent to "respond" by killing your Dryad before you play your second land. If you do something else in-between the Dryad and that second land, however, then the opponent will be able to respond with something.

Some previous versions of the rules allowed you to specify which "drop" you were using as you played each land, but it allowed for unintuitive situations where a player could use the additional drop, blink the object that was giving it, and then use its additional drop again. It was an odd and somewhat complicated rules quirk that was smoothed out when the rules for land plays were revised to the current version.

Rhadamanthus on Master of Cruelties and interactions

Yes, it still triggers. The declare blockers step of combat only gets skipped if there were no creatures declared as attackers or put onto the battlefield attacking. Otherwise, it always happens, even if it is impossible for any blockers to be declared. If Master of Cruelties is attacking then there will definitely be a declare blockers step and its last ability will trigger if it doesn't get blocked.

xcontla on Master of Cruelties and interactions

I have some questions with this card in some specific times.

I understand that the ability triggers in the declare blockers step.

  1. If Master of Cruelties gains skulk, Does his ability still trigger? ("... opponent life becomes 1").
  2. If I equipped some artifact that made Master of Cruelties unblockable, Does his ability still trigger? ("... opponent life becomes 1").
  3. If the opponent doesn't have creatures in the battlefield, Does his ability still trigger? ("... opponent life becomes 1").

Thank you.

danielgonmar: You need to use double square brackets around the card's name to make the link work - Nine Lives, Resourceful Defense

To answer your question, since Resourceful Defense only moves counters between things you control, the same player has to control both Nine Lives and the Defense in order to use the Defense to move counters off of Nine Lives. If they're controlled by different players, which might be the situation in the original question where things are being moved around with Harmless Offering, then it won't work.

Also, it's much better to post a new question as its own topic rather than respond to a very old one. With the way this site works, adding a new post to a Rules Q&A discussion doesn't move the topic to the top of the list. This topic is about 4 years old, so the only reason I was aware of your comment is because the site auto-subscribed me for notifications on this topic after I originally posted in it. You will be able to stack the abilities so that you can sacrifice the created spirit.

Caesar’s initial trigger is only one to optionally sac a creature. You can resolve the equipments trigger first.

Sorry if a question like this has been asked a million times, but the other night my buddies were saying that the legendary rule keeps two of the same legendary’s from being on the battlefield at the same time regardless of who’s controlling them. I’m not sure if that’s true though. Last Sunday I was playing with coworkers and a dude made a token copy of my Avacyn, Angel of Hope and no one brought up the legendary rule. I’ve read the part of the rule that says: “If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are controlled by the same player, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards.” I don’t see how that would keep opponents from making a copy of someone else’s legendary, or even keep two opponents from playing the same commander. If there’s a part in the rule that I’m overlooking please let me know and thanks in advance.

You can only cast spells and activate abilities when you have priority. Each time before a player receives priority state-based actions are checked and performed.
