The Sun Empire - Explorers of Ixalan old

Commander / EDH Dinosaurs Eggs Enrage RGW (Naya)

Ossian_Sealgair

“The amber sun smokes with fury, gazing on foes that gather like ants invading our home. We are ready! Blade and claw strike as one.” - Huatli, the Sun’s Heart

Heirs of the Golden City:

When the sun of Ixalan rises at daybreak, all life in the verdant jungles and highest mountaintops rise to greet it and give thanks for its nourishment. The Sun Empire rises with the dawning sun as well, stirred now from a long rest of peace and prosperity. As warring factions converge on the continent of Ixalan in search for the fabled city of gold, the finest shamans and warriors of the Sun Empire muster for battle and bring with them an entire host of nature’s wrath: Dinosaurs. The gilded city of Orazca is their ancient capital and birthright, and they will not see it sullied by outsiders.

Deck Descriptors:

• Impactful • Menacing • Tanky

Deck Strategies:

  1. Your pack of ferocious dinosaurs and their human handlers must work in tandem to hunt effectively. The human contingent of your deck focuses on cost reduction (Kinjalli's Caller, Otepec Huntmaster, etc.) and extra mana production (Atzocan Seer and Drover of the Mighty) to get your dinosaurs out faster, and the dinosaurs can in turn go on the offensive in ways that the humans generally cannot.

  2. Certain non-creature cards in the deck help make extra mana to help cast your dinosaurs. All artifacts in your in your deck produce mana in one way or another, and some like Fountain of Ichor and Orazca Relic even have additional effects. Other cards like Thunderherd Migration and New Horizons help ramp also.

  3. Your Dinosaurs make quite an impact when they hit the field. Many, like Ripjaw Raptor, have the “Enrage” mechanic which will trigger whenever they are damaged, so opponents may be hesitant to attack you for fear of rousing them. Luckily the Sun Empire is resourceful when it comes to rearing dinosaurs: certain cards like Dual Shot and Raging Swordtooth can deal them minor damage to trigger their effects for you. At the undisputed top of the food chain are the awe-inspiring Elder Dinosaurs: Etali, Primal Storm, Zetalpa, Primal Dawn, and Ghalta, Primal Hunger.

  4. Huatli, represented in Huatli, Dinosaur Knight, Huatli, Warrior Poet and Huatli, Radiant Champion, is the Sun Empire's champion and will get good mileage late in the game because your field has so many built-in defenses with its creatures. Each provide a suite of versatile abilities that synergize well with your dinosaurs.

  5. Atla Palani, Nest Tender transforms your field into a dinosaur hatchery. Eggs are a great way to cheat out your powerful dinos. They make for a great defense too, since your opponents may not want to attack and risk of cracking any your eggs open. You can rely on the aforementioned damage-dealing cards in your deck like Raging Swordtooth to break them open yourself. Be wary though that your eggs are only effective with Atla Palani on the field to care for them—they lose their ability to hatch without her presence.
