AstroAA on How Many EDH Decks Do …

I keep seven assembled, albeit I really only play one to two. I only really get to play once a week, and I've been having far too much fun with one of my decks lately that it's all I've really played for the last five or six months. I run the following:

  • Sythis, Harvest's Hand - This was my main deck for around a year. It's a prison deck focused on preventing your opponents from playing Magic. High power to borderline cEDH.
  • Titania, Protector of Argoth - My favorite deck I have assembled right now and in contention for my favorite deck I've ever played. It's a land combo deck based around Aluren + Temur Sabertooth + Eternal Witness combos. This is the deck I play the most right now. High power.
  • Adeline, Resplendent Cathar - I recently put this deck back together. It's human tribal, and is explosive but folds over easily. Medium to high power.
  • Kaalia of the Vast - I have played this deck once since putting it together. It's a mix of Angel Tribal and Kaalia goodstuff. High power.
  • Oona, Queen of the Fae - This was a degenerate combo deck, but I wanted to include more faeries. A mix of degenerative combo and tribal faerie. High power.
  • Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain - Artifact storm. Can win turn one but is also the most glass cannon deck I've ever built. I don't play this much because this deck is pure solitaire. High power.
  • Celestial Kirin - This is a $100 budget deck. It's a tribal spirit/boardwipe deck that isn't very good, but I keep it around for the memes. Low power.

I prefer the high power field of play. It's much more open than cEDH and you have a lot more variety in commanders and viability in other wincons that aren't Demonic Consultation into Thassa's Oracle or Underworld Breach lines.

AstroAA on Who is Your Favorite Tribal …

I've had several tribal decks in my life, namely being:

Brimaz, King of Oreskos tribal soldier. Many of the decks using him as the commander I've seen use him as a tribal cat general, but I think the soldier tribe fits him better because you can use anthem effects like Field Marshal, Auriok Steelshaper, and Knight-Captain of Eos to greater effect. I turned the deck into Adeline, Resplendent Cathar tribal humans/anthems, because I think she's a simply better Brimaz at being more aggressive.

Lyra Dawnbringer tribal angel. Angels are my favorite creature type in Magic, and I think she's easily the best general for the archetype outside of maybe Kaalia of the Vast. It wasn't very good, and I eventually took it apart because I never played it.

Celestial Kirin tribal boardwipe. It's technically tribal spirits, but I like to call it tribal boardwipe because it basically turns every spirit into a boardwipe. I built it on a $50 budget, so it's very unoptimized and pretty slow, but it's still fun to play in a more slower-paced setting. I still have it, and play it when my group does budget games.

Oona, Queen of the Fae tribal faerie. I built this deck to be more of a hybrid combo/tribal faerie deck, and it slaps. It's not as good as optimized Oona combo lists, but it still wins games. I still have it built.

If you couldn't tell I really like mono-white tribal decks.

The oldest commander I've built and kept around is Asmira, Holy Avenger. It's probably due for a budget-y update as some of the cards are increasing in price and could probably be replaced with new cards (updates logged were just for editing description). We Who Are Going to Die Salute You - Asmira EDH and Asmira, Holy Avenger Budget Human EDH. At one time I had Kangee, Aerie Keeper, but no longer have a list for it.

I've built quite a few Kamigawa legends as well, including recently Patron of the Moon, Yomiji, Who Bars the Way, Celestial Kirin, and Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant  Flip

While this is very unintuitive, lands do actually have a converted mana cost of 0. According to rule 202.3a:

The converted mana cost of an object with no mana cost is 0, unless that object is the back face of a double-faced permanent or is a melded permanent.

This is the reason that combos like yours and Celestial Kirin and Ugin's Conjurant do work!

Also, I like the updates you've made, I'll keep looking at it.

Funkydiscogod I really like the Tallowisp + Oppressive Rays combo. I don't like the specific Ordeal of Nylea suggestion as it seems way too slow and easily disrupted, but think something like Daybreak Coronet could be ok.

In general, I think that this Celestial Kirin idea is way too fragile and needs a ton of synergy to be effective. I have been looking at arcane and spirit spells and like Horobi's Whisper , Nether Spirit , Peer Through Depths , and Ethereal Haze just as cards. I still don't think there's quite enough, but maybe Tallowisp , Oppressive Rays , and Pacifism could make it good.

hungry000 I really like the Celestial Kirin idea. I saw it on against the odds, but forgot about it and think it has a chance to work. I don't really know where to go with it though. W or W/G D&T seems like a worse version of an already meta deck and a controlling variant (say, with border posts) seems pretty clunky as I'd likely need a lot of tutors to get the combo together. I've looked into spirit/arcane decks before and they just seemed bad, but with newish spirits like Spell Queller it might be better.

If you want to take inspiration from existing decks, the best purely mono w deck in modern is Martyr Proc ( Martyr of Sands + Proclamation of Rebirth + Squad Hawk). Another decent white deck to look at is Death & Taxes, especially since they unbanned Stoneforge Mystic and printed Giver of Runes .

Looking at that list of cards, a Martyr Soul Sisters deck comes to mind. You would use the token makers in conjunction with the soul sisters to gain life, then grind them out with Sky Hussar. This idea does not seem to be very competitive, but it would use a bunch of those cards.

If I had to try and build a decent mono white deck that wasn't just a copy/paste, I'd make one with the Celestial Kirin and Ugin's Conjurant combo and back it up with some D&T cards like Giver of Runes . Incidentally, a deck like that would like Flagstones of Trokair very much.
