Captain Ripley Vance

Legendary Creature — Human Pirate

Whenever you cast your third spell each turn, put a +1/+1 counter on this, then this deals damage equal to this creature's power to target creature, player or planeswalker.

Not saying you're wrong at all here, but it was a Secret Lair, so no new cards, and I guess they wanted a newish card in there. for some small attempt at color balance.

Who would you have chosen to represent him? Main characteristics are that he's disguised (no spoilers), he's a capable swordsman, and he's living mostly off a combination of his reputation and doing things nobody expects him to do (which don't always work out). Captain Ripley Vance has a good feel, but is a pretty underwhelming card. The Legendary Human Rogue selection took off in the last couple years, and there wasn't a great option before that, in my opinion. Something with maybe a dash of .

Hey, nice version, but where's Glint-Horn Buccaneer? I saw your deck in the featured decks ad.

You can improve on balancing card quality since you have some amazing cards here, but also quite a few lackluster ones that are much lower on power level compared to the others. An example is Scalding Tarn which is excellent, but not playing a dual land that Tarn can search for... Steam Vents could replace Izzet Guildgate and Volatile Fjord could replace Highland Lake. Other Izzet dual lands to add in place of some basic lands to improve color fixing from lands: Training Center, Cascade Bluffs, Sulfur Falls, Stormcarved Coast and Frostboil Snarl.

I don't think I've even seen Armillary Sphere in the same deck before that also has Mana Drain, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Jeweled Lotus, Dockside Extortionist, Goldspan Dragon, Jeska's Will and Urza's Saga. Sphere is really out of place power wise. Consider cutting Sphere for Arcane Signet? The Diamonds are also subpar, considering cutting both of them for Talisman of Creativity and Izzet Signet? These are not expensive changes, but can make a big improvements on ramp.

Another example of card quality balance are the counterspells. Mana Drain, Counterspell, Pact of Negation, Negate are great thus you don't also need to play Hornswoggle, Admiral's Order and even Lookout's Dispersal because these are not as good.

Some more one drop/two drop flying Pirates and unblockable Pirates can more easily trigger Malcolm and Breeches. Spectral Sailor, Warkite Marauder, Departed Deckhand could replace some higher mana cost Pirates such as Captain Ripley Vance, Deadeye Quartermaster, Prosperous Pirates and Sailor of Means. You have Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Dockside Extortionist, Goldspan Dragon and Corsair Captain which are all excellent thus you don't really need to play other Pirates that create treasures when they ETB because those cards are not as good.

Wonder and Anger are powerful with Pirates, but they need help to get them into your graveyard because you don't want to ever cast them. Expanding with more loot can help to draw/discard them that also adds more draw to your deck. Faithless Looting, Windfall, Mask of Memory and Frantic Search could replace Mutiny, Hornswoggle, Dowsing Dagger  Flip and Admiral's Order. These changes are also not expensive and improve card quality.

Good luck with your deck.

Hey, this deck is amazing! But I recommend using Irencrag Pyromancer instead of Captain Ripley Vance, it is faster and easier to continue to get rewards.

By the way, how about Chandra's Ignition?

Heya! Just wanted to try Feather out as a Commander and your deck seems like a ton of fun to play! Love the thought process and work you've done with this primer! I got some questions if you wouldnt mind (which ARE'NT about either Sunforger or Aurelia's Fury xD)? I do have a Imperial Recruiter and Recruiter of the Guard which I feel kinda interested to add into the deck for tutoring key creatures like Storm-Kiln Artist, Monastery Mentor and other juicy stuff. Would it be a bad idea slotting in either of those two instead for Captain Ripley Vance and/or Velomachus Lorehold? Still I haven't tried the deck out at all yet, how do you feel those two cards play-out for you atm?

Cheers!

Echoing wallisface, budget aggro lives or dies by casting 1 mana spells as fast as possible.

If you move to straight rakdos colours, you lose only Daring Saboteur and Frantic Inventory , while your mana becomes a lot more reliable.

With the land set here, I'd go so far as to run almost entirely 1 colour with splashes for higher cmc spells.

A few options; Deadeye Tracker + Grasping Scoundrel + Outcast with a focus on 1 and 2 mana black spells - Kitesail Freebooter in particular is good in a black shell with other sources of discard.

Rigging Runner + Daring Buccaneer + Fanatical Firebrand will work well with a focus on fast damage partucularly spells that deal direct damage and like creatures. I'd look at Captain Ripley Vance and the budget staple Curse of Stalked Prey alongside sources of evasion.

Blue as a primary colour has some neat options if you want to go for a more instant-speed tempo game - Siren Stormtamer , Spectral Sailor , & Brineborn Cutthroat , while opening up sideboard tricks like Crafty Cutpurse and cheap past staples like Mana Leak .

There are a few notable pirates to build combos around - Skyship Plunderer , Timestream Navigator , but they don't have a coherent theme which will make builds awkward.

KayneMarco - at first I wasn't keen on Breakthrough because I'm not really a pump deck and when it came out I sort of dismissed it; looking at it now, however, I'm more inclined to potentially find a spot for it, because treasures can be saved up. Breakthrough is almost like a ramp spell, but I'm also hesitant because I can't really see myself casting this over a cantrip if I've got free mana, unless I'm trying to save up for a big turn. I'm going to test it though and see how it feels. You are absolutely right though, they just keep printing broken stuff for Feather, and I'm all about it :)

Nic44 - Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you like the deck idea. Shrine of Loyal Legions and Shrine of Burning Rage are both actually very good in this deck, because the red one can hit any target. I never thought about the white one though, and for my build at least it would be very good. I don't even think these cards need testing to know they're good, but I am going to try and find a slot for them now that you've brought them back to my memory. Thanks for the suggestion and the comment!

moonfletcher1983 - Thanks for the kind words! Aurelia's Fury like Sunforger has it's uses, and they can be good in this deck style, so if it's performing for you then that's great! I'm definitely not taking this deck apart any time soon, so the updates will keep rolling. Testing MH2 cards now to see which ones stick, though Blacksmith's Skill and Captain Ripley Vance are my top picks for this set for Feather so far. Definitely others I'm testing too, but none with as high hopes as these. Thanks again for the comment!
