dylan.575 on Inalla and the Goblet of Fire

Not sure if you want to break up with Inalla... I know that feeling. She's a lot of fun, but it tends to steer away from a functionally playable state. Most of the time, I found myself missing a finisher or unable to execute what was needed due to mana shortages for my fun combos. The times I did win were either with a weenie stomp or when my fun combos actually worked.

Anyway, this week, I updated my Inalla deck and I'd like to share my insights.

Too Many Strategies/Themes All the wizards with unique flavors want a place in this deck. However, thinking about spells and combos quickly dilutes the deck's strategy. So, I decided on the main strategy and an extra theme (like ramp, draw, etc.) to support that strategy. Each theme must consist of between 8-16 cards in the deck. This ensures there's a better chance of drawing the theme cards. The additional category I labeled as 'value' tags. These are cards that help the deck but aren't essential for supporting the main strategy. This is where the first cuts are made.

Take, for example, Beguiler of Wills. I love that card - its ability and art are so cool. However, it's expensive at 6 mana (Inalla trigger for haste), and most of the time, my board state was poor due to having a lot of expensive cards. So, I found myself only stealing a power 2-3 creature. Everyone would know what happens next turn and react accordingly, necessitating more mana for protection. What's the strategy here? Stealing the big bad (eventually) or gathering combo pieces? This led me to cut her. BUT if the strategy/theme involves untap/tap effects like Intruder Alarm & Faces of the Past, this card makes more sense (although it still needs haste from Lightning Greaves).

This puzzling process indeed takes time, and time can sometimes make us lose sight of the original purpose of the deck. Getting caught up in exploring cards and potential combos can make it even harder to create a functional deck. I hope my insights and struggles shed some light on yours. It's a journey to strike the right balance between fun and functionality in deck-building.

Welcome to the club, Danutercisd!

For being a first deck, I'm impressed to see the Mana Crypt, Cyclonic Rift, Fierce Guardianship, The Meathook Massacre, Underground Sea... I'm going to guess that budget isn't a major constraint here.

One of my pet cards for this sort of thing is Geth, Lord of the Vault. It offers milling, reanimation theft for creatures and artifacts, and a pretty big evasive body.

If you like instant-win combos, both Bloodchief Ascension and Duskmantle Guildmage set up full-deck milling and lots of damage with the Mindcrank in the deck.

Another suggestion is to diversify your copy/theft effects. There's a lot of ways to copy opponents' creatures, but you can take them directly with Control Magic, Beguiler of Wills, and similar effects, steal and copy spells with Talent of the Telepath or Twincast, or yank something from their deck with Praetor's Grasp. You opponents are probably going to be doing things beside throwing creatures around, and being able to react to different threats and take advantage of different opportunities is always good.

I was making a similar artwork list and stumbled upon yours. It's very good and I found some great additions. I'd like to suggest some other cards I've found myself:

Wakedancer, Bloodbond Vampire, Asylum Visitor, Guul Draz Vampire, Stream of Unconsciousness, Beguiler of Wills, Nin, the Pain Artist, Oriss, Samite Guardian, Cursebreak, Ruthless Cullblade and Manaforge Cinder

Cheers!

Whenever I see another Merieke Deck, my auto recommendation is Pemmin's Aura with it on Merieke and enough mana, you can wipe an entire board. And that seems like the direction your deck is heading.. destroying controlled creatures.

If you want to simply keep the creatures, i would also recommend Beguiler of Wills, with a good untap engine (like the above aura), you can simply own the entire board.

Beguiler of Wills - she is a powerhouse in my Merieke deck. Especially when used with Pemmin's Aura. with enough mana, you can take over an entire board in a turn.

I would recommend both as adds. Pemmin's also works well with Merieke if you just want to board wipe an opponent.

I would also through a couple utility lands in, Detection Tower and Arcane Lighthouse, just in case

I'm going to complain a little more. I apologize.

Why are all the bards in Magic ? Yisan, the Wanderer Bard was kind of the trendsetter, and he's not especiallu D&D bard-ish. I can kind of forgive Elvish Bard and Joraga Bard since they're Elves.

Which of these describe traditional/stereotypical D&D bards?

Instinct driven, nature-centric, strong belief in destiny, physically powerful, focused on predator-prey interactions, minimalist

My answer is none. There is nothing about traditional D&D bards. They tend to fall into two broad categories, inspiring and manipulative. Inspiring would be -- Rally the Peasants , Outlaws' Merriment , Deafening Clarion , and Heartwarming Redemption are cards I would identify as showing this type of bard. Manipulative would be , with Beguiler of Wills , Besmirch , Role Reversal , and Captivating Crew as representative cards. Bards aren't nature characters. They can probably survive in the woods alone, but so can a paladin. Bards are , not .
