Obosh, the Preypiercer

Asked by Cardgamer9632 3 years ago

Having Obosh, the Preypiercer on the battle field with Malignus. Then i play Gravitic Punch. Does the power on Malignus, that is dealt from Gravitic Punch get doubled because of Obosh, the Preypiercer?

Gravitic Punch Says:

Target Creature (Malignus) deals damage equal to it's power to target player.

We can shorten that to:

Malignus deals damage equal to it's power to target player.

Since Malignus is the one dealing the damage and not the Gravitic Punch and has an odd CMC Obosh, the Preypiercer should double it's damage.

Short answer: yes

Will work as intended.

Obosh looks for an odd cmc - check (punch is even, but affects malignus which still ends up dealing the damage)

Doubling half a life total (rounded up) will result in insta kill.

Obviously, Obosh must be in your main deck and can't be your companion in this scenario, as Punch is even cmc

I guess my question was to the word equal on Gravitic Punch.

Had me thinking that the effect would not be dealt by Malignus

You can think of the effects being applied in a certain order. Malignus' stats are a variable and set to half a life total all the time, but always end up being a distinct number.

Then you cast Punch, which checks for that exact number, even if that number on malignus changes with punch on the stack.

While punch resolves, the otherwise dormant effect on Obosh kicks in. It is a replacement effect (that does not trigger or go on the stack, notice the 'if' being the marker for those kind of effects) that overrides the # of damage, while punch is resolving.

The wording on Gravitic Punch says the creature will deal damage. If Gravitic Punch was dealing the damage instead, it would read, "Gravitic Punch deals damage equal to target creature's power to target player."

Since Gravitic Punch says the target creature will deal damage, that creature is the source of the damage (Gravitic Punch is merely allowing the creature to deal damage in a situation outside of the norm, and dictating how much is done: "equal to its power" rather than, say, "equal to its toughness" or "equal to its power plus two" or something else along those lines).

Obosh, the Preypiercer looks at the CMC of the source of damage only, which in this case is the target creature (Malignus). Since that CMC is odd, Obosh will replace the damage with double damage.
