How will the legend rule apply here?

Asked by ChrisNicolella 3 years ago

Key Cards: Otrimi, the Ever-Playful Mist-Syndicate Naga

Scenario: Say Otrimi, the Ever-Playful is mutated onto Mist-Syndicate Naga and then the mutated creature deals combat damage. The "create a token" trigger resolves but what happens to the newly created Otrimi, the Ever-Playful.

Question: Will the token fizzle all together due to the legend rule, or will just the Otrimi, the Ever-Playful portion fizzle, or will nothing fizzle meaning the legend rule does not apply.

Any advice is appreciated. Let me know if you need further clarification

You will get a token copy of your mutated creature. Whether or not the legend rule applies depends on what the top card of you mutation is.

If the top card is Otrimi, the token will be legendary and have the same name. You pick either the token or the original mutation to put into the graveyard. Importantly, by the time this happens you have already picked a target for the other combat damage trigger, so you can bring Otrimi back to your hand if you choose to put the original mutation in the graveyard.

In the case where the mutation isn't legendary (because Otrimi isn't on top), the legend rule doesn't apply and you get a copy of the mutated creature.

Hope this helps!!

You can't* bring [original] Otrimi back to your hand if you choose to put the original mutation in the graveyard.

I know that was just a typo but I figured I'd clarify.
