Piloted by Elaine, her comments in bold.

Game 1

Caley wins the toss and plays first. He keeps an opening hand of Island, Watery Grave, 2x Dreadbore, Chromatic Lantern, Counterflux, and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.

Risky, but very good if I draw that third land.

Elaine keeps a hand of 2x Hallowed Fountain, Island Terminus, Supreme Verdict, 2x Unburial Rites.

Just need to get some creatures in the graveyard.

C1

C plays Watery Grave tapped.

E1

E draws Dimir Charm. She plays Hallowed Fountain tapped.

C2

E2

E draws Glacial Fortress. She plays Hallowed Fountain tapped.

Also need black mana, thx.

At this rate I'm just going to be CASTING creatures.

C4

C draws Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. He plays Island and passes.

E4

E draws Godless Shrine and plays it untapped. (C 20, E 18). She passes.

Curious that she played it untapped. Too early for a Sphinx's Revelation. She has something instant speed with black mana in it, but what could it be?

C5

C draws Barter in Blood and does nothing. End step, E casts Dimir Charm targeting her own library.

Oh, ok, this is a reanimator deck.

E puts Forbidden Alchemy and Dissipate into the graveyard, and Thought Scour into hand.

E5

E draws Snapcaster Mage and plays Island.

C6

C draws Counterflux and does nothing. End step, E flashes down Snapcaster Mage, but C Counterfluxes it. Then E casts Thought Scour on herself, milling Detention Sphere and Forbidden Alchemy, and drawing Plains.

E6

E draws Forbidden Alchemy. She casts Unburial Rites on Snapcaster Mage, targeting and casting Thought Scour. E mills Plains and Hallowed Fountain and draws Angel of Serenity. She passes.

Man, terrible luck.

C7

E7

C8

C draws Staff of Nin and casts it. He immediately destroys a 1/1.

E8

E draws Forbidden Alchemy. She attacks with the 1/1 and hits. (C 19, E 18).

C9

C draws Counterflux and Murder. He does nothing. E casts Forbidden Alchemy in the end step, keeping Nephalia Drownyard and tossing Thought Scour, Isolated Chapel, and Glacial Fortress. He blows up the remaining 1/1 with Staff of Nin.

E9

E draws Detention Sphere. She plays Nephalia Drownyard.

C10

C draws Watery Grave and Swamp. He plays Swamp, casts Bolas, and destroys Godless Shrine. In response, E flashes back Forbidden Alchemy, keeping Drowned Catacomb and throwing away 2x Glacial Fortress and Sphinx of Uthuun.

C11

Too much. Way bad luck on the milling.

C boards out 3x Mystic Retrieval and 3x Think Twice and boards in 2x Grafdigger's Cage, 3x Slaughter Games, and 1x Curse of Death's Hold.

Game 2

C1

C3

E4

E draws Drowned Catacomb. She plays it and attacks with her spirits. Caley tries to Murder one of them, but E Dissipates it. (C 18, E 18).

C4

C7

E8

E draws Sphinx of Uthuun. She plays Godless Shrine tapped and casts the Sphinx. The Sphinx reveals Swamp, Watery Grave, Sphinx of Uthuun, Forbidden Alchemy, and Unburial Rites. C puts the Sphinx in one pile and the other cards in another. E selects the Sphinx and trashes the rest.

About six feet high and risin'.

This ordering makes sense because I need to buy a lot of time.

E attacks with the Sphinx and hits. (E 18, C 7)

C9

C draws Murder. He immediately Murders a Sphinx.

E10

E draws Drowned Catacomb and plays it. She casts Thought Scour on C, milling 2x Gilded Lotus. E draws Plains. E attacks with Sphinx. (E 18, C 2).

C10

C draws Staff of Nin and concedes.

Sideboarding

No changes from either side.

Game 3

C1

C plays Swamp and passes.

E1

If your deck alternately floods you AND screws you, that's how you know you have the mana balance right. PROTIP.

E2

E draws Snapcaster Mage and plays Glacial Fortress.

C3

C draws Drowned Catacomb, plays it, and casts Chromatic Lantern, then passes.

Phew.

Black mana!

C6

Yes, YOU TOO can cast Bolas on four land using these three simple steps!

E6

E draws Forbidden Alchemy. She puts Detention Sphere on Bolas.

C7

C draws Staff of Nin and casts it.

E7

E draws Duress. She passes and discards Sphinx of Uthuun.

C8

C draws Dragonskull Summit and Murder. He plays Dragonskull Summit and passes.

E8

E draws Unburial Rites. She does nothing and discards Sphinx of Uthuun. [

C9

C draws Barter in Blood and Gilded Lotus. He casts Gilded Lotus.

E9

E draws Snapcaster Mage and concedes.

A little early, maybe, but mana screw is frustrating.

Never going to beat him stalling out for black mana while he builds a perfect hand with the staff.

Comments

Trashy games in 2 and 3. Game 1 was a little better, but even that one was plagued by bad luck for the reanimator deck. Not really a good look at these decks' performance.

That was a pretty slow-moving and unfun set of games. Not sure I have a lot to say about it other than it's good to have good draws?

E should just save Dimir Charm to counter Barter in Blood .

FINALLY. I feel like I've waiting an eternity for the (not-so) Daily Dose. Always enjoy reading.

Doesn't Dimir Charm put two cards into the graveyard and one back on top of the library? At turn 5 of the first game, you made it sound like it puts that last card in your hand...

@aeonblue - Sorry, I know it's been a while. Trying to increase the frequency, but I've got a lot that I'm trying to juggle. Stay patient.

@Timekeeper - That's what the notes said. Either we played it wrong, or else I recorded it wrong. Apologies either way.

@KrazyCaley

It's just one small mistake, and it certainly doesn't appear to have affected the outcome of the game. As always, thanks for doing these!

I feel like the first hand was a bad keep on E's part. 2x cards that do nothing, 3x lands, and 2x cards that do nothing at the present time are not very good. Also, I believe that turn 5 of game 2 you have E where you should have C.

exarkun809 says... #8

Well that was weak.

You definitely have to mulligan both games 1 and 3. It's a control deck, but it definitely has a curve and you have to have something playable in the first few turns (or black mana!). T1-3 has to have a Thought Scour , Dimir Charm , Lingering Souls , or at least a tapped shock land.

Also, sideboarding was a bit off. I probably should have put in the description, but most decks sideboard GY hate against this deck (obviously) and it's better to put in the entire sideboard package (everything but Supreme Verdict and Terminus ) in and just go all control in this matchup.

So I'd of done:
-2 Supreme Verdict -2 Terminus -4 Forbidden Alchemy -4 Unburial Rites -1 Snapcaster Mage

+2 Detention Sphere +1 Dissipate +3 Duress +1 Jace, Memory Adept +2 Planar Cleansing +2 Sphinx's Revelation +2 Witchbane Orb (at least in game 3 vs Slaughter Games )

KrazyCaley says... #10

@quargur - That's what I said. I mean, I definitely have the advantage, but I hardly have a lock.
