Thraximundar and Drivnod

Asked by Skalle_the_Reckless 1 year ago

If an opponent sacrifices a creature while I control Thraximundar and Drivnod, Carnage Dominus, does Drivnod cause Thraximundar's second ability to trigger twice and add two +1/+1 counters to Thraximundar?

Yes. Drivnod will see that a creature died to trigger Thraximundar's ability, and duplicate it.

I asked a similar question a while back about Drivnod and Kothophed, if you want a more detailed explanation.

Drivnod doesn't interact with Thraximundar. Though dying is the usual result of a creature being sacrificed, Thraximundar doesn't trigger from the dying part. It triggers from the act of sacrificing the creature. This is addressed in one of the rulings notes in Drivnod's Gatherer entry:

2023/02/04: An ability that triggers on an event that causes a creature to die doesn't trigger twice. For example, an ability that triggers "whenever you sacrifice a creature" triggers only once.

When I said in the other topic that "the exact text of the triggered ability doesn't matter", that wasn't a good way for me to say that. What I meant was that the triggered ability doesn't specifically need to mention a "creature", it just matters that the triggering event for the ability is a creature dying in order for Drivnod to apply. I apologize for the confusion.

Yeah Rhadamanthus is correct here. The trigger is a sacrifice one, not a death trigger, so won’t get doubled-up.

Skalle_the_Reckless: Answers to your question have been up for a while. Since there don't seem to be any more follow-ups or corrections to be made, I marked one of them as the "Accepted answer" so this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions. In the future you can take care of this yourself using the "Mark as Answer" button on the response that you feel best answers your question.

I try to avoid selecting my own responses when I do this, but in this case it was the most correct option.
