How does Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker's activate interact with morphed units, amplify, and devour?

Asked by Orange+ 7 years ago

What would happen if I made a copy of a morphed Imperial Hellkite? Would it resolve? Would I be able to turn the copy face up?

What would happen if I made a copy of Kilnmouth Dragon? Would it get the counters from the original? Would the amplify trigger?

What would happen if I made a copy of Predator Dragon? Would it get the counters from the original? Would the devour trigger?

Thanks

First off for all these, the token has no tie to the original. No counters or anything will be shared.

  1. You will get a 2/2 morph creature with no way to unmorph it. It will not have a back side as it is not a physical DFC and you are only copying what's showing.

  2. Amplify does not trigger, it's a replacement effect that modifies how the creature enters the battlefield. For each dragon card you reveal as the token enters, it will get 3x the revealed cards in +1/+1 counters.

  3. Devour does not trigger, it's a replacement effect that modifies how the creature enters the battlefield. For each creature you sacrifice as the token enters, it will receive twice that many +1/+1 counters.

Thank you for the answer. However I am a bit confused about your explanation on 2 and 3. On one hand you say that Amplify and Devour does not trigger, and on the other you say that the effect does take place.

Which one is correct? Can they both be correct?

Thanks

As Raging_Squiggle explained, devour and amplify are not triggered abilities. Therefore, they can't trigger.

These abilities are instead static abilities. Each one creates a replacement effect that modifies how the creature enters the battlefield. These kinds of effects just apply; they don't trigger, they don't use the stack, and they can't be responded to.

Triggered abilities and replacement effects are two separate things in Magic.

Triggered abilities start with "when", "whenever", or "at". And are generally followed by a trigger condition. (I.e. "Whenever this creature attacks", "At the beginning of the end step")

Replacement effects usually start with "if", "as", or "this card" but not always. (See the Amplify and Devour reminder text). These modify an event taking place so that another event will happen instead.

  1. For the token of Kilnmouth Dragon, the event being modified is it entering the battlefield. As it enters, you may reveal dragon cards from your hand and the token will enter with 3 +1/+1 counters for each card revealed.

  2. For the token of Predator Dragon, the event being modified is it also entering the battlefield. As it enters, you may sacrifice any number of creatures, and it will enter with 2 +1/+1 counters for each sacrificed creature.

What Raging_Squiggle means by "Amplify/Devour does not trigger" is "Amplify/Devour is not a triggered ability". They will still be applied as the token copy enters the battlefield, because they're replacement effects that modify how a permanent enters the battlefield. It's important to make the distinction between what is and isn't a triggered ability because of the differences in how certain types of abilities are handled by the rules of the game.
