Can I deck someone using Introduction to Annihilation?

Asked by GrodanX 1 year ago

So, let's say I have the ability to copy Introduction to Annihilation an infinite number of times while on the stack and each of my opponents has at least one valid target for it. Even if the exile part of the card fizzles due to the target already not being there, does the controller get to draw a card? Is it possible to deck someone this way? My reasoning here is that the card draw isn't conditional on the target being exiled while resolving the spell (as in, there is no "if this permanent is exiled this way" clause) and the controller of the permanent should be clear when choosing the target at the beginning of the interaction.

No, this won't work the way you want it to. If all of a spell's/ability's targets are missing or illegal when it's time for it to start resolving, then it's removed from the stack and doesn't resolve. None of its effects happen. In your example that means the copies of Introduction to Annihilation left without a valid target don't make anyone draw a card. But hey, at least you exiled all your opponents' permanents!

GrodanX: An answer to your question has been up for a while. Since there don't seem to be any more follow-ups or corrections to be made, I marked it as the "Accepted answer" so this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions. In the future you can take care of this yourself using the "Mark as Answer" button on the response that you feel best answers your question.

I try to avoid choosing my own responses when I do this, but in this case it was the only option.
