Can I decide the value of 'bargained' X to be less than the 'bargain'?

Asked by DianTherra 1 year ago

Hiya! So let's imagine I had permanents that made a spell I'd like to cast - with X in its casting cost - cheaper. Let's assume that spell costs 5 less to cast and that this affects only the X value. Can I decide that X will be less than 5? If the spell costs one white mana and X generic, can I say that X is, for instance, 3?

This is an interesting rules interaction to me. I never really found an answer to this, but I might just be looking in the wrong places. Hope someone can answer, and thanks in advance!

As part of the process of casting a spell with in the mana cost you declare a value for X. So if you had things granting you a discount of to your spells you could still declare X of 3 for Glimpse the Sun God to only tap 3 creatures and it would be treated just as if you had cast a spell costing for the purpose of determining mana cost.
